Stewardship Talks

Over the years I have heard the word, but I am ashamed to admit that at that time that’s all it was, a word! I know that Stewards on a Cruise Ship took care of the details that were important to the comfort and safety of the Ship, but it never dawned on me that it could relate to me.
During the past year an emphasis has been made on Stewardship…our talents, time, treasure, etc, … and I looked up the word in the dictionary. I remembered the parable about the Steward of the Master and it suddenly hit me.
I began to think, and I made the connection….God created the world and everything in it, and he created us in his Image. God gave us Stewardship over his creations…. we were his managers. We were to ensure the safety, the growth and, the goodness he created. We were to manage God’s estates. He placed enormous faith in our ability and desire to do a good job for Him….to become good Stewards.
There are many facets to running an “estate”….there is the financial cost, there is the maintenance, the propagation, the building and rebuilding and all things necessary to keep it in good standing.
Stewardship starts at the top. Love for God and all his Creations. Love for God’s word and the duty to discipleship. Therefore, God’s voice which comes from the Church to us and from us to others, must always be respected, repeated and resounding and so we take care of our Church….we keep it healthy, we make sure it functions with our financial support and with the time we give to assist in its functions. We ask ourselves, do we do all we can? Do we do all we should…We are the only ones who can answer these questions.
This earth that God created and gave to us for safe keeping…are we doing all we can do to maintain this beautiful world God made or are we neglecting it in some ways? Will we leave a healthy earth to our children, our grandchildren and future generations? Only we can answer these questions.
The people, the animals, the fish and the birds, these too are part of our “heritage”….Do we concern ourselves with the poor, the sick, the needy, the unborn who are violently aborted, the cruelty that can and does occur between men and between their impact on those who share this world God made for us?
Do we care enough, do we extend our hands and our hearts enough? Only we can answer these questions.
God entrusted us to be his stewards….Have we done a good job in sharing our time, talent and treasure for the good of his Church? Can we do better? These are the questions only we can answer.

I was raised Catholic and our family went to Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church in Springfield Ohio. What a wonderful church. As a young child I remember everything was centered on the church. All the families played together, ate together, and worshiped together. Back then we did not call it stewardship. It was just a way of life. I’m sure a lot of you have the same memories of your childhood parishes. Then we moved to Florida when I was 12 years old and things took a drastic change due to family misfortunes. Being away from St. Bernard’s affected me now that I look back on it. I stopped going to church and I didn’t go back until my early 20’s but it was not a Catholic Church. I’ll make a long story short. By the grace of God I came back to his church 3 years ago and things haven’t been the same.
It was last year when I heard Sheryl Howell talk about stewardship. This was new to me. At first, I thought it was all about money. Then she said she was on the cleaning crew and she was asking for volunteers for just 1 hour a month to help clean the church. With my busy life with work and our 2 little boys, I could spare 1 hour a month to clean the church. I knew I could clean because I do that around the house a lot. So I signed up. I had no idea that something so simple would affect my life so much. On top of adoration, I get to spend a little extra time with our Lord while cleaning. Also, I’ve been bringing my children with me. This is a bonus due to I want them to understand the importance of stewardship and we should give our time, talent, and treasure to his church. That feeling of St. Bernard’s has come back. I’m also on the stewardship committee. I love this part of being involved with other activities and meeting other parishioners. Stewardship is a part of my life. I can say that I’ve come closer to our Lord by being more involved with the church. A few weeks ago, we had an appreciation dinner for our volunteers at the church. I was going to be a waiter and serve dinner. At first I thought it was going to be work. I was tired and so was everyone else. What fun we had. It didn’t feel like work and it touched my heart greatly to see all the smiling faces enjoying the food that we prepared.
Since
they asked me to talk to you about stewardship, I’ve been reading a lot of things about it. I read in a past issue of the Florida Catholic that there’s a college teaching about stewardship. See how things have changed. Stewardship now needs to be a college course when back in the old days we just gathered by the ringing of the church bells. Oh, I’m guilty as charged. Don’t have anytime, I don’t have any talent, and there goes the church again talking about money. This is not a financial question but a spiritual one, a question of priorities, and what’s really important in your life. I did not know that stewardship was going to change my life so much. Faith is a gift from God and being more involved with his church has helped my faith grow.
I’m asking each one of you, please examine your conscience and really look into volunteering your time, talent and treasure to our church. Food and drinks will be provided and this is where you can sign up. Oh, there is no age limit when it comes to stewardship. If you can breathe, you can help. If you’re saying to yourself “I have no talent” the only way you can find out your talents is to get involved. Thank you and may the love of Christ be with you.
